2007 05 27 Black Butte, Reliance

Another driving day. I did go to Reliance to shoot some film at the old coal tipple that has been more or less preserved, and is the only one of it's type still standing.

Just off I80 between Rawlins and Rock Springs is the Black Butte Coal Mine. (More here. And here.) Demand for coal is soaring all over the world, and a second pit has been opened here in the last two or three years. This is a crew drilling holes in preparation for blasting. Buy coincidence I read this not too long before this trip. It's well worth reading. I would like to get into one of these enormous active mines and photograph. I have started the process.
